A culinary institution, marmalade has been served at British breakfast tables for centuries - but it's also a great ingredient for all sorts of sweet and savoury recipes

Bread and Butter pudding

Of course! Why didn't we think of it before? Extend the perfect marriage between marmalade and hot buttered toast by incorporating it in this classic British pud. Simply spread in a layer of marmalade between your bread before baking. Waitrose has a great recipe, which also uses brioche for added decadence!

With cheese and beer

Sweeter than a chutney, but with a sharp 'edge' that cuts through cheese, marmalade is the perfect addition to the classic Ploughmans combo. Check out Sophie Atherton's recommendations for beers to complete the package!

Ice-cream

Move over raspberry ripple – marmalade swirled through ice cream is our new fave frozen treat! Incredibly easy to do; make a basic custard and mix in marmalade before cooling and churning. We like the look of this version from lovefood.com which is topped with chunks of fruit.

Cocktails!

The bitter side of marmalade makes it a fantastic sharpener to many different cocktails. A bitter orange and lemon Collins with vodka is a good place to start if you want to introduce marmalade to your drinks cabinet!

Orange cakes

It's really easy to use marmalade in your bakes – you just need to account for the density that it will give. And of course, you can always use it as a sandwich layer in sponges with a good dollop of clotted cream! Experiment with other fruity flavours such as passion fruit and elderflower as well.

Glazed vegetables

Add real oomph to your roasts with marmalade glazed carrots and onions. Roast the veg for 10 minutes before stirring your preserve over the mix. Add a good twist of salt and pepper and maybe even some rosemary for added flavour. It's an absolute winner!
