The Ox, a stylish gastropub on Clapham High Street, has quickly established itself as a standout destination since opening in October. Combining contemporary design with classic charm, its prime location near the tube and vibrant atmosphere have drawn attention from locals and visitors alike, and it’s easy to see why people keep coming back once you visit.
A perfectly balanced atmosphere
The Ox’s interior blends sleek modern touches with the warmth of a traditional gastropub. Large windows invite the lively energy of Clapham High Street, while the carefully designed layout feels both upscale and comfortable. It’s a space that appeals to a wide audience, with an ambiance that’s both inviting and refined, and we knew we were in for a treat as soon as we walked through the doors.
Craft cocktails to start
We began our evening at the bar – where every good evening starts – and weren’t disappointed. Delivering expertly crafted cocktails, it helped set the tone for a memorable evening. Options like the Green Park, with its sweet and delicate flavours, and the bold, fiery Spicy Margarita showcase the skill and creativity behind each creation. Each drink is a refreshing and balanced introduction to the gastropub experience.
Fresh and flawless
The menu begins with fresh, seasonal offerings that set high expectations. Carlingford Rock Oysters were a standout for us, served impeccably fresh and beautifully presented, providing a light yet indulgent start to our meal.
The main highlight
At the heart of the menu is the Porterhouse Steak, dry-aged on-site and sourced from the restaurant’s family farm in the Scottish Borders. This sharing dish exemplifies the quality and care The Ox is becoming known for. Cooked to medium rare, as recommended, the steak offers a delightful contrast of textures, with rare meat near the bone and a perfectly seared exterior.
Accompaniments complement the steak beautifully too: buttered savoy cabbage adds an earthy sweetness, boulangerie potatoes bring indulgent flavour, and the truffle mayo provides a luxurious finishing touch.
Show-stopping desserts
Desserts at The Ox are as impressive as the mains. The Saffron Poached Pear, paired with vanilla mascarpone and nougatine, is definitely a dish to write home about. Its subtle warmth, creamy texture, and crunchy elements create a harmonious balance that left a lasting impression on us – and we’d return to The Ox just to have this again.
A thoughtfully curated seasonal cheese board provides an alternative dessert option, featuring delicate, well-matched cheeses and complementary accompaniments.
A commitment to quality
One of The Ox’s defining features is its dedication to quality and provenance. Beef sourced directly from livestock raised on the family farm ensures exceptional flavour and texture, showcasing the restaurant’s farm-to-table ethos.
Exceptional service
The service at The Ox is attentive and thoughtful, enhancing the overall dining experience. Staff members are knowledgeable, approachable, and committed to ensuring every guest enjoys their visit.
A new essential for Clapham’s dining scene
The Ox is a remarkable addition to Clapham’s vibrant dining landscape. With expertly prepared dishes, standout desserts, a welcoming atmosphere, and a strong commitment to quality, it sets a high standard for gastropubs. Whether local to Clapham or visiting from elsewhere in London, The Ox is a must-visit destination that promises an unforgettable culinary experience.
