Spoons at the ready – we’ve undertaken the tough job of finding our favourite jams and curds to top a homemade scone

Scottish Raspberry Preserve, £1.50, mackays.com

With lovely raspberry pips and a bright, tart flavour – this jam is wonderfully thick, which means it holds together well on top of the scone. It is made with fruit grown in the berry fields of eastern Scotland.

Passion Fruit Curd, £3.40, rosefarmsomerset.co.uk

An award-winning curd, created with free range eggs and butter by this specialist preserve maker in Somerset. All the spreads are made with traditional recipes, by hand in open pans.

Thursday Cottage Lemon Curd, £2.65, redmoped.co.uk

Thick, sweet and rich – this curd is a refreshing treat fit for any afternoon tea spread. The texture is perfect for generously dolloping onto a scone, and it works well in yoghurt as well.

Tiptree Little Scarlet Strawberry Conserve, £3.99, redmoped.co.uk

The king of jams, this dark crimson spread is bejewelled with tiny, whole strawberries – and it’s a joy. Tiptree is the only company to make it, and the jam was even mentioned by James Bond in From Russia With Love. It’s a Great British favourite.

Super Jam Blueberry and Blackcurrant spread, £1.69, ocado.com

This rich, flavour-packed jam is made in Scotland by Fraser Doherty. He first created the range at the age of 14 using his grandmother’s recipes. It’s a juicy and decadent choice – and works brilliantly with thick cream.

Roots & Wings Strawberry Extra Fruit Jam, £3.25, foodrevolution.co.uk

British grown ‘Albion’ strawberries from Herefordshire are gently stirred by hand in traditional open copper lined pans with Honeoye strawberries to create the perfect marriage for a lusciously rich strawberry jam. Delicious!
