The 'Robin' apple is the latest addition to Britain's rich tapestry of apple varieties. The newly discovered variety is sweet, firm and juicy. Following an extensive orchard practice, independent British fruit farmer Richard Pemble was first to discover how to grow Robins properly in the UK and now does so exclusively for Asda. Richard now cultivates 18,000 Robin apple trees at his Kent farm. He explains: “The denser the apple, the more compact its flavour. Once the Robins begin to bloom, their energy flow must be restricted by squeezing the branch with a pair of pliers and destroying the outer bark. This impacts the flavours of the fruit and allows for optimum taste. On biting into a Robin, it should be hollow to touch and have a texture that’s juicy enough for the liquid to slip straight down your throat." Robins will be ready to pick on the last week of August and hit the shelves soon after in limited edition packs of four, at £1.25 (Asda).
